Asbestos Policy Procedure Template
The Asbestos Policy Procedure is a Word template that sets out how a business identifies and manages the risks from asbestos and materials containing asbestos in the premises it operates in. It covers what asbestos is, the company's responsibilities, assessing the risk of exposure and the control measures used, from leaving material in place to specialist removal.
It applies to all employees, with Title, File Location, Issue No, Issue Date, Controlled By and Approved By fields, an Amendment Record and a Business Use information classification in the footer.
What the Policy Covers
- Amendment record, summary, scope and applicability - the control note on amendments, the purpose of the policy, its scope across all premises the company operates in and who must follow it
- Description of asbestos - a short description of asbestos, where it was used in buildings and the harm caused when damaged material releases fibres
- Company responsibility - presuming materials contain asbestos without strong evidence otherwise, clearing and signing affected areas, keeping a record and informing anyone exposed
- Risk assessment - assessing the severity of risk from each material and the number of people who could be exposed, with reassessment at set intervals
- Managing the risk of asbestos - control measures by condition and risk, from leaving material in place to quarantine or removal by a specialist contractor, plus training and review
Built for Managing Asbestos in Premises
- Materials presumed to contain asbestos unless there is strong evidence to the contrary
- An up to date record of the location and condition of asbestos containing materials
- Areas of potential contamination cleared of people and clearly signed to stop anyone entering
- High risk material removed by an appointed specialist asbestos removal contractor
- Policy reviewed regularly and after any uncontrolled release of asbestos fibres
Who Needs an Asbestos Policy Procedure?
Any business operating in premises where materials containing asbestos could be present, and the managers responsible for identifying them, keeping the record and informing employees of the risk.
Using the Policy
Edit the procedure to match your premises, such as how often the risk assessment is repeated and which workers receive asbestos training. Name the person in the Controlled By field, give it top level approval and brief all employees on it.
Related Documents
The PP-1-14 Health and Safety Policy Procedure and the PP-7-100 Health and Safety Policy Procedure both include asbestos within wider health and safety arrangements, for businesses that prefer one procedure covering every topic.
Control Measures by Condition
The control measure depends on the condition of the material. Low risk material in good condition can be left where it is, material of moderate risk or posing a threat to health is removed or placed under long term quarantine with limited access, and high risk material is removed by an appointed specialist contractor.
Assessing the Risk of Exposure
The risk assessment weighs the severity of the risk posed by each asbestos containing material against the number of people who could be exposed if fibres were released, and builds in monitoring so the risk is reassessed at set intervals.
Would you rather we prepared it for you?
A day of remote support can take the risk assessments you already have, move them into one consistent format with the same scoring throughout, and build your hazard register from them, so the hazards this policy covers are backed by a current assessment.
