ISO 22301:2019 Awareness Training Course
The ISO 22301:2019 Awareness Training Course is a PowerPoint presentation for introducing staff to the ISO 22301 business continuity management system standard. It opens with what ISO 22301 is and how it has developed, sets out the Harmonized Structure, then works through clauses 4 to 10 with the main requirements of each clause explained in plain terms and referenced to the clause number, taking the clause 8 business continuity requirements one sub-clause at a time.
The course supports ISO 22301 clause 7.3 Awareness, which requires personnel to be aware of the business continuity policy, their contribution to the BCMS and the implications of not conforming, and their own role and responsibilities before, during and after disruptions. It also gives managers a clause by clause overview of the standard before implementation or an internal audit.
What the Presentation Covers
- What is ISO 22301 - the standard for the requirements of a business continuity management system (BCMS), its history from the first edition in 2012 to the 2019 edition and the 2024 climate change amendment
- Harmonized Structure - the clause headings shared with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and ISO 45001, and the sub-clauses under each, including the clause 8 headings from impact analysis to the exercise programme
- Clauses 1, 2 and 3 - scope, normative references and terms and definitions, which contain no auditable requirements, so organisations certified to ISO 22301 demonstrate conformity with clauses 4 to 10
- Clause 4 Context of the Organisation - internal and external issues, including whether climate change is relevant, interested parties and their requirements, legal and regulatory requirements for continuity (4.2.2), the scope of the BCMS and the BCMS itself
- Clause 5 Leadership - top management leadership and commitment, the business continuity policy with its commitments to satisfy applicable requirements and continually improve the BCMS, and roles, responsibilities and authorities
- Clause 6 Planning - actions to address risks and opportunities, business continuity objectives and planning to achieve them, and planning of changes to the BCMS
- Clause 7 Support - resources from people, buildings and equipment to information, technology, suppliers and finance, competence, awareness, communication and control of documented information
- Clause 8 Operation - operational planning and control, business impact analysis and risk assessment, strategies and solutions, plans and procedures including the response structure and recovery, the exercise programme and evaluation of documentation and capabilities
- Clause 9 Performance Evaluation - monitoring, measurement, analysis and evaluation, the internal audit programme and the impartiality of the audit process, and management review inputs such as the business impact analysis and exercise results
- Clause 10 Improvement - reacting to a nonconformity, dealing with its consequences and eliminating its causes (10.1), and continually improving the suitability, adequacy and effectiveness of the BCMS (10.2)
Who Needs an ISO 22301 Awareness Course?
Any organisation implementing or maintaining an ISO 22301 business continuity management system needs its people to know their part before, during and after a disruption. The course suits small and medium sized businesses running their own awareness sessions for new starters, existing staff and managers without bringing in an outside trainer. It also works as a refresher before an internal or external audit, or as a starting point for the person leading business continuity.
Included in the ISO 22301 Toolkit
This presentation is part of the ISO 22301 Toolkit and the integrated toolkits that include it.
Delivering the Course
Run the presentation as a group session or a one to one briefing, adding examples from your own business against each clause. Record who attended on the F-Q7 Training Talk Attendance Record and issue the ISO 22301:2019 Training Certificate Template to each person who completes the session.
Clause 8 Business Continuity in Detail
Clause 8 Operation gets the most space in the slides. An overview lists sub-clauses 8.1 to 8.6, then each is taken in turn, covering business impact analysis and risk assessment, the identification and selection of strategies and solutions, the response structure, warning and communication, business continuity plans, recovery, the exercise programme and the evaluation of documentation and capabilities.
Pairs with Other Training
For a wider introduction, the Introduction to the Integrated Management System explains how the integrated management system works and Introduction to ISO Audits and Certification covers the audit and certification process. Staff who go on to carry out internal audits can follow up with the Internal Audit Training Presentation.
