Infection Control Policy Template

An infection control policy template setting out how the organisation reduces the risk of infection spreading at work, to protect workers and anyone else who could be affected by the work.

The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.

What the Infection Control Policy Covers

  • How infection spreads - contact with an infected person, coughs and sneezes, bodily fluids and contaminated surfaces
  • Hand washing - when and how, including on arrival, after using the toilet and around food
  • Coughs, sneezes, cuts and wounds - tissues, covering wounds, and changing contaminated clothing
  • Clean workplace - regular cleaning of equipment, work areas and frequently touched surfaces, with separate materials for toilets
  • Protective equipment - worn, disposed of or cleaned correctly where provided for tasks with a risk of infection
  • Reporting illness - telling the line manager, staying away while infectious, and 48 hours clear after vomiting or diarrhoea
  • Food handlers and vulnerable people - reporting gastric illness in the household
  • Exposure to infection - first steps after contact with bodily fluids, with incidents recorded and investigated
  • Vaccination - encouraged for workers at greater risk, and workers told where a vaccination is recommended for their role
  • Outbreaks - following public health advice and assessing risk, with extra measures such as cleaning, visitor limits and remote working
  • Responsibilities - managers providing facilities, and workers reporting infectious illness

Using the Policy

Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.

Who Needs an Infection Control Policy?

Any organisation that wants clear hygiene and illness reporting rules, particularly where workers handle food or work with vulnerable people.

Works with the Infection Control Procedure

The PP-7-18 Infection Control Policy Procedure sets out the procedure, and the RA-HS38 Infectious Disease risk assessment supports the assessment of infection risks and outbreaks.

Document Control

The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
