Good welds come from checks made before, during and after the job, not just at the end. The guidance gives whoever leads the talk the detail, and the record shows who was there.
This training talk is supplied in fully editable MS Word format, prepared using the F-Q7 Training Talk Attendance Record form template. All text is in Calibri font for improved readability.
The following document labelling is included in the footer:
- Talk number and title

Weld Inspection Training Talk
A training talk on weld inspection for welders, fabricators and inspection staff - the checks made before, during and after welding, common weld defects and what happens to work that fails. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.
Two Files in One Download
- TT-4-01 Weld Inspection - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
- GG-4-01 Weld Inspection, OP-4-01 Factory Production Control - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards
Talk Description
- Pre-start checks - procedures, drawings, materials, equipment and working conditions
- In-process inspection - welding parameters, temperatures, stray arcs and spatter
- Cleaning and visual inspection of completed welds
- Common weld defects, and recording them
- Checking weld dimensions against the weld procedure specification (WPS)
- Acceptance criteria in ISO 5817, and marking and quarantining nonconforming work
Running the Talk
Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.
Why Nonconforming Work Is Marked and Quarantined
A weld that fails inspection can easily find its way back into production if nobody marks it or moves it aside. The talk closes on marking and quarantining so that everyone knows what happens to failed work and who decides what happens next.
Adapting the Talk
Both files are fully editable, so add your own weld procedure specifications, the inspection gauges you use, where your quarantine area is and the name of your welding coordinator or inspector. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.
Keeping the Training Record
File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when.
Who Is It For?
Welders, fabricators, supervisors and anyone who inspects welded work. It suits induction, a refresher before a new contract starts or a follow-up after weld defects have been found.
Delivering Talks Regularly
Short, regular talks keep good working practice in front of people. Run this one alongside the other welding and fabrication training talks to build awareness one topic at a time.
