COSHH Assessment — Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers bleach in the form of sodium hypochlorite solution (NaOCl; ~3–8% w/v) — one of the most widely used cleaning and disinfecting substances in workplaces. Bleach-based products are found in offices, schools, care homes, food preparation areas, hospitality venues and facilities management operations across virtually every sector.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name, chemical name (sodium hypochlorite / NaOCl), SDS reference and physical state (clear pale yellow liquid, strongly alkaline)
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation of vapour and mist, ingestion, skin contact (including chemical burns from concentrated solution) and serious eye contact hazards, with specific first aid for each route
- Critical mixing hazard — the danger of mixing bleach with acids or ammonia, which releases toxic chlorine gas, is specifically addressed
- Safe working exposure limits — no UK WEL for sodium hypochlorite solution itself; chlorine gas WELs included (STEL 1 ppm / TWA 0.5 ppm) from EH40
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant, Corrosive and Environmental hazard classifications
- PPE requirements — rubber, neoprene or PVC gloves, eye protection and hand washing guidance
- Emergency procedures — spillage response including containment and disposal as chemical waste, and fire guidance
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any business that uses bleach for routine cleaning, disinfection or sanitising, including:
- Offices and commercial premises
- Schools, colleges and education settings
- Care homes and healthcare facilities
- Food preparation areas, kitchens and hospitality venues
- Facilities management and contract cleaning
- Leisure centres and sports facilities
