Intellectual Property Policy Template
An intellectual property policy template recognising that intellectual property may be of significant value to the organisation and should be managed and protected, while respecting the intellectual property rights of others.
The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.
What the Intellectual Property Policy Covers
- IP as an asset - managed and protected as something of significant value
- Copyright checks - before buying or acquiring information, software or products that include intellectual property
- Legal requirements - complying with the laws and requirements on intellectual property
- Objectives - IP objectives and performance communicated throughout the organisation and to interested parties
- Interested parties - working closely with them to preserve intellectual property
- Awareness training - for staff as required
- Original and licensed - everything used or produced original and free of plagiarism, or legally purchased or licensed
- Reporting - suspected infringement of the organisation's IP or of others' rights reported to line management
- Review and contracts - IP documentation and controls reviewed, and IP rights covered in contracts where required
Written to Be Shared
Like every alphaZ policy, this is written as a public policy statement that can be shared openly with workers, customers, suppliers and assessors. The internal detail of how it is carried out belongs in your procedures.
Using the Policy
Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.
Who Needs an Intellectual Property Policy?
Organisations working to ISO 27001, and any organisation that creates, licenses or relies on software, designs, content or other intellectual property.
Included in the ISO 27001 Toolkit
This policy is part of the ISO 27001 Toolkit and every alphaZ ISO toolkit that covers ISO 27001.
Works with the Information Security Policy Procedure
The PP-8-100 Information Security Policy Procedure includes an Intellectual Property Policy section, and software licences and other assets can be recorded on the F-IMS25 Information Assets Register.
Document Control
The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
