Fire Safety Policy Template
A fire safety policy template giving an overview of the arrangements to prevent fire and the safety arrangements in the case of a fire, for workers and visitors at any site the organisation controls, with a commitment to meeting fire safety legislation.
The policy has Approved By and Date Approved fields and carries a Public information classification, so it can be shared with workers, clients and other interested parties.
Fire Safety Responsibilities
- Fire Safety Responsible Person - overall responsibility, including the Fire Risk Assessment and co-operating with other responsible persons in shared premises
- Fire Wardens / Fire Marshals - ongoing fire safety management, evacuation and monitoring
- All persons on site - aware of emergency procedures, evacuation plans and fire safety rules
Fire Safety Management
- Evacuation - procedures practised and tested at least annually, with a record kept
- Fire Risk Assessment - completed by a competent person, recorded in writing, reviewed regularly and after significant changes, with recommendations actioned
- Neighbouring properties - the effects of a fire considered and fire spread reduced
- Training - key staff trained in their fire safety roles
- Monitoring - premises, escape routes, signage and emergency equipment checked
- Equipment - serviced and maintained by a competent person, with ongoing checks
- Assisted evacuation - arrangements such as personal emergency evacuation plans for anyone who needs help
Fire Safety Procedures
The policy includes short procedures that sit alongside the specific fire procedures for each site: what to do on hearing the fire alarm, what to do on discovering a fire, and the duties of Fire Wardens and Fire Marshals during a fire, including liaising with the Fire and Rescue Service and checking everyone is accounted for.
Using the Policy
Add your company name and logo, check each commitment matches what your organisation does and edit any that do not, then approve and date the policy and share it with workers and anyone else who needs to see it.
Who Needs a Fire Safety Policy?
Any organisation that controls premises or sites used by workers or visitors.
Works with the Fire Safety Policy Procedure
The PP-7-09 Fire Safety Policy Procedure sets out the procedure, the F-HS28 Fire Safety Risk Assessment, F-HS30 General and Fire Risk Assessment and RA-HS65 Premises - Fire Safety risk assessment support the Fire Risk Assessment, the F-HS38 Fire Extinguisher Register and F-ENV5 Fire Safety Inspection Form record checks, and the TT-7-09 Fire Safety toolbox talk briefs workers.
Document Control
The footer carries the policy number and title, information classification, version and page numbers, and the approval fields record who approved the policy and when, so it can be controlled with the rest of your management system documents and listed on a document register such as the F-IMS20 Document Register.
