Anti-Bribery and Corruption Guidance

A general guidance document on anti-bribery and corruption for all workers, supporting the anti-bribery and corruption policy. It explains what bribery and corruption are, the controls the company has in place, each worker's obligations, the warning signs to look out for and how to report a concern.

Topics Covered

  • What bribery and corruption are - definitions of both, with payments, gifts, hospitality, donations and facilitation payments all covered as forms of bribery
  • Company obligations - the controls in place, from the policy and bribery risk assessment to supplier due diligence and rules on gifts
  • Your obligations - never offering or accepting a bribe, following the gifts and hospitality rules, declaring conflicts of interest and reporting concerns
  • Recognising bribery - warning signs such as insisting on a single supplier, requests for cash payments, suspicious invoices and unusual purchases
  • Why it matters - the risk of prosecution, lost contracts and lost trust, and the benefit of visible prevention such as ISO 37001
  • What to do - reporting to a line manager or the anti-bribery function, confidentially where needed, with no reprisal for reports made in good faith

Who Is It For?

All workers, including managers and anyone who deals with suppliers, business associates, gifts or hospitality.

Included in the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 37001 Toolkits

This guidance is supplied with the TT-1-18 Anti-Bribery and Corruption training talk, which is part of the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 37001 toolkits, including the integrated toolkits that combine them.

Using the Guidance

Issue it with the anti-bribery and corruption policy at induction, and keep it as a reference for anyone dealing with suppliers, gifts or hospitality. Record who has received it, for example on the training matrix.

Warning Signs to Look For

The guidance lists situations that carry a bribery risk, such as an associate who insists on a single supplier, refuses to sign written agreements, offers excessive gifts or asks for cash or payments abroad. It adds signs inside the business too, including poor quality goods being accepted, incomplete invoices and undeclared conflicts of interest, while making clear that not every sign means bribery is taking place.

Adapting the Guidance

Edit the guidance to match your own arrangements - the name of your anti-bribery and corruption policy, who is responsible for anti-bribery, your reporting channels and your rules on recording gifts and hospitality.
