COSHH Risk Assessment
What Does This COSHH Risk Assessment Cover?
- Skin contact with hazardous substances — corrosive, irritant or sensitising chemicals causing dermatitis, chemical burns and allergic reactions
- Inhalation of hazardous substances — vapours, fumes, dusts, mists and gases causing respiratory irritation, occupational asthma and lung damage
- Eye and face contact — splashing or misting of corrosive or irritant substances causing serious eye injury and permanent vision loss
- Ingestion of hazardous substances — accidental ingestion through contaminated hands, food or drink causing poisoning and systemic ill health
- Storage and spillage — improper storage or accidental spillage creating fire, explosion and environmental contamination risks
- Disposal of hazardous waste — incorrect disposal of chemical waste creating exposure and environmental harm
Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Moderate to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;
- COSHH assessments, chemical-resistant gloves and barrier cream for skin protection
- Substitution with less hazardous substances, local exhaust ventilation (LEV) and Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)
- Eye wash stations, safety goggles and face shields for splash protection
- No eating or drinking in chemical areas and thorough handwashing procedures
- Designated storage areas, spill kits and segregation of incompatible substances
- Licensed waste contractors and hazardous waste transfer documentation
A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.
