A spill procedure only helps if people remember it with oil on the floor. Talking it through beside the spill kit, with the guidance to hand, is the best way to make it stick.

Spill Procedure Training Talk

A training talk on the spill procedure for staff who handle oils, fuels and chemicals - how spills cause pollution, dealing with a spill safely and reporting it afterwards. The download gives you a one-page attendance record with the talk description already filled in, plus the full guidance document to run the talk from.

Two Files in One Download

  • TT-6-05 Spill Procedure - the attendance record, with the topic and talk description ready to use and a signature line for each attendee
  • GG-6-05 Spill Procedure - the guidance document the talk is based on, to prepare from and to issue to staff afterwards

Talk Description

  • How spills of oils and chemicals harm water, land and wildlife
  • Everyday materials that can also cause pollution
  • The legal and business consequences of causing pollution
  • Never washing a spill down a drain
  • Dealing with a spill - stop the leak, use the spill kit and seal off drains
  • Disposing of contaminated materials, and reporting spills and near misses

Running the Talk

Read through the guidance beforehand, talk the points through with the team, then have everyone sign the record. Keep the signed record as evidence that the briefing took place and who received it.

Questions raised during the talk can be noted in the comments box on the record, so anything that needs following up is not lost.

Why Spills Are Never Washed Down a Drain

Hosing a spill away can feel like the quickest fix, but it carries the pollution straight into the drainage system and on to streams and rivers. The talk gives this its own point so that it sticks when someone is under pressure to clear up fast.

Adapting the Talk

Both files are fully editable, so add where your spill kits and drain covers are kept, which drains on site are surface water drains, and who staff should report a spill to. Update the talk description if you cover extra points.

Keeping the Training Record

File the signed record with your training records, or log the talk against each attendee in a training matrix, so you can show who has been briefed and when. Keep the record for as long as your other training records are kept.

Who Is It For?

Staff who handle or store oils, fuels and chemicals, including drivers and maintenance teams. It works at induction, after a spill or near miss, and as a refresher alongside a spill kit drill.
