Risk Assessment and Method Statement Template
A combined risk assessment and method statement - a RAMS - on a single document. It assesses each activity, hazard and consequence with the inherent and residual risk ratings and controls, then sets out the safe method of work, supervision, competence, material and documentation requirements, with a briefing sign-off.
A RAMS brings the risk assessment required by the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 together with the written safe system of work in one document - the format principal contractors and clients most often ask for. It supports the risk assessment and operational control requirements of ISO 45001.
Built for ISO 45001 and Combined RAMS
The document supports the hazard identification, risk assessment and operational control requirements of ISO 45001 (clauses 6.1.2 and 8.1):
- The activity, hazards and consequences assessed with inherent and residual risk ratings
- The control measures in place recorded against each hazard
- A safe method of work following on from the assessment
- Supervision, competence, material and documentation requirements, with a briefing sign-off
What's Included in this Risk Assessment / Method Statement
The document runs from assessment through to a briefed safe method in one place:
- Header - completed by, date completed, number, the location, task or activity, and who is affected or at risk
- Risk assessment - numbered activities, hazards and consequences with inherent risk rating, control measures in place and residual risk rating
- Safe method of work - how the work is to be carried out safely
- Requirements - supervision, permits and competence, material and documentation requirements, and notes
- Briefing record - name, signature and date for everyone briefed
Who Needs a Risk Assessment / Method Statement?
Any organisation asked for a RAMS - most commonly construction, trades, installation and contracted work where a principal contractor or client requires a combined document before work starts. It also suits higher-risk tasks in manufacturing and facilities, and any business working towards or maintaining ISO 45001 certification.
Included in the ISO 45001 Toolkit
This form is part of the ISO 45001 Toolkit - risk assessments, method statements, procedures and guidance for managing health and safety in one download - and is included in every alphaZ ISO toolkit that covers ISO 45001.
Pairs with the Method Statement and Risk Assessment
Where you keep them separate, use the F-HS20 General Risk Assessment and the F-HS23 Method Statement. For a single task see the F-HS24 Method Statement - Task.
