COSHH Assessment — GP Cement (General Purpose Portland Cement)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers general purpose Portland cement — a calcium silicate and aluminate powder used in construction for concrete, mortar and render. Strongly alkaline when wet; contains trace hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) and may contain respirable crystalline silica.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name (General Purpose Portland Cement), chemical name (calcium silicates, aluminates; trace Cr VI and crystalline silica), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — dust irritating airways with chronic lung disease risk; ingestion causing alkaline burns; slow-developing cement skin burns; serious eye damage; specific first aid for each route
- Dual hazard — silica carcinogen and chromium sensitiser — respirable crystalline silica causes silicosis and lung cancer (Group 1 carcinogen); trace Cr VI causes allergic contact dermatitis; health surveillance required for regularly exposed workers
- Workplace exposure limits — cement dust TWA 4 mg/m³ respirable; RCS TWA 0.1 mg/m³; Cr VI TWA 0.01 mg/m³, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Corrosive pictograms
- PPE requirements — including safety goggles, PVC or neoprene gloves covering wrists, coveralls and RPE for dusty operations
- Emergency procedures — dry spill: vacuum or wet methods, no dry sweeping; wet spill: contain and absorb
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where Portland cement is used, including:
- Construction contractors mixing concrete and mortar on site
- Groundworks and civil engineering operations
- Bricklayers and plastering contractors
- Precast concrete and block manufacturing facilities
