COSHH Assessment — Heat Sink Compound (Silicone / Polydimethylsiloxane Thermal Paste)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers heat sink compound based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) silicone with thermally conductive fillers — used in electronics manufacturing and maintenance to improve thermal transfer between processors, heat sinks and other components.
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name (Heat Sink Compound Plus), chemical name (polydimethylsiloxane / PDMS with zinc oxide or alumina fillers), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — inhalation, ingestion, skin contact and eye contact, with specific first aid for each route
- Low acute hazard — environmental precaution — the compound presents low acute hazard in paste form; avoid discharge to drains or watercourses as filler particles are harmful to aquatic organisms
- Workplace exposure limits — respirable dust TWA 4 mg/m³ and inhalable dust TWA 10 mg/m³; limits relevant only if filler dust is generated
- CLP hazard classification — Environmental hazard pictogram
- PPE requirements — including safety spectacles and nitrile or PVC gloves
- Emergency procedures — avoid discharge to drains; clear spills immediately; fire: not flammable, use media appropriate to surrounding conditions
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where thermal interface compound is used, including:
- Electronics manufacturing and PCB assembly operations
- Computer hardware build and repair workshops
- IT support and server maintenance teams
- Electronics research and development laboratories
COSHH Compliance
This document provides ready-to-use evidence of COSHH compliance and supports occupational health and safety management. The assessment is based on the F-HS5 COSHH Assessment template, is fully editable in Microsoft Word, and can be customised with your company details, site-specific information and review dates.
