COSHH Assessment — White Spirit (Petroleum Distillate / C7–C12 Hydrocarbons)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers white spirit — a refined petroleum distillate (C7–C12 aliphatic and alicyclic hydrocarbons) used as a solvent, thinner and cleaning agent in painting, decorating, engineering and manufacturing. Also known as mineral spirits or Stoddard solvent.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

• Substance identification — trade name (White Spirit / Mineral Spirits), chemical name (refined petroleum distillate C7–C12), SDS reference and physical state
• Health effects and first aid — inhalation causing narcotic effects and CNS damage; ingestion with potentially fatal aspiration risk; skin defatting and cancer risk with repeated contact; serious eye damage; specific first aid for each route
• Critical aspiration hazard — do NOT induce vomiting if swallowed; even small quantities aspirated into lungs can cause fatal chemical pneumonia; seek emergency medical attention immediately
• Workplace exposure limits — white spirit TWA 575 mg/m³ and STEL 700 mg/m³, from workplace exposure limits guidance
• CLP hazard classification — Flammable, Irritant, Environmental and Long-term health hazard pictograms
• PPE requirements — including nitrile gloves, eye protection, adequate ventilation and no ignition sources
• Emergency procedures — spillage: eliminate ignition sources, absorb with inert material; fire: CO2, dry powder or foam
