COSHH Assessment — Render (Cement-Based External Wall Render)
This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers cement-based external wall render — a Portland cement, sand and polymer modifier mix used for finishing and weatherproofing external masonry surfaces. Strongly alkaline when wet; may contain trace crystalline silica and hexavalent chromium (Cr VI).
What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?
The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:
- Substance identification — trade name (Cement-Based Render / External Wall Render), chemical name (Portland cement, sand aggregate, polymer modifiers; trace RCS and Cr VI), SDS reference and physical state
- Health effects and first aid — dust causing respiratory irritation; wet render causing slow-developing alkaline skin burns and serious eye damage; Cr VI causing allergic dermatitis; specific first aid for each route
- Alkaline burn and silica hazard — wet render is strongly alkaline (pH >12); burns develop slowly and can be serious; RCS where present is a Group 1 carcinogen
- Workplace exposure limits — cement dust TWA 4 mg/m³ (respirable); RCS TWA 0.1 mg/m³, from workplace exposure limits guidance
- CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Corrosive pictograms
- PPE requirements — including safety goggles, PVC or neoprene gloves, coveralls and RPE during mixing and spray application
- Emergency procedures — dry spill: vacuum or wet methods; wet spill: contain; do not wash to drain
Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?
This assessment is suitable for any workplace where external render is applied, including:
- Rendering and plastering contractors
- Construction contractors and housebuilders
- Refurbishment and building maintenance teams
- External wall insulation (EWI) system installers
