COSHH Assessment — Concrete Mould Oil (Mineral Oil Mould Release Agent)

This pre-completed COSHH assessment covers concrete mould release oil — a refined petroleum mineral oil applied to formwork and shuttering to prevent concrete adhesion. Used across construction, precast concrete manufacturing and civil engineering.

What Does This COSHH Assessment Cover?

The assessment is fully completed and ready to use, covering all sections required for a complete hazardous substance risk assessment:

  • Substance identification — trade name (Concrete Mould Release Oil), chemical name (refined mineral oil with release additives), SDS reference and physical state
  • Health effects and first aid — inhalation of oil mist causing respiratory irritation; ingestion with aspiration risk causing chemical pneumonia; skin contact with carcinogen risk; eye irritation; specific first aid for each route
  • Long-term skin cancer risk — repeated skin contact with mineral oils is associated with increased risk of skin cancer; minimise contact, use gloves, and wash skin thoroughly after use
  • Workplace exposure limits — mineral oil mist TWA 1 mg/m³ over 8 hours, from workplace exposure limits guidance
  • CLP hazard classification — Irritant and Environmental pictograms
  • PPE requirements — including nitrile gloves, eye protection, and apron for spray application
  • Emergency procedures — spillage containment; avoid discharge to watercourses; fire precautions (high flash point)

Who Is This COSHH Assessment For?

This assessment is suitable for any workplace where concrete mould oil is used, including:

  • Construction contractors using formwork and shuttering
  • Precast concrete and block manufacturing facilities
  • Civil engineering and groundworks operations
  • Scaffolding and temporary works contractors
